what book…If You Ran the World? That’s the question Shelly Rachanow asks in the title of her book. It’s a great question. I’d have Barak Obama as my Press Secretary, Michelle as my Head of Education, David Suzuki as my Minister of the Environment, Bono as my Human in charge of Humanitarianism, Richard Branson as my Consumer Affairs Minister, Nelson Mandela as my Elder Council Advisor, Michael Pollan as my Secretary of Agriculture, Oprah as my Advocate for Women and Children, Paul Watson as my Warrior for Wildlife and Gene Baur as my Head of Animal Welfare…

…and I’d make sure everyone was fed good quality food. Not crap in boxes, not animals, not artificial laboratory-manufactured, factory-produced food, but real, honest, grown-in-the-garden organic goodness. I’d do away with all weapons, major polluters would carry the tab for taxes, and every Friday the globe would come together on Skype or iChat for a Mastermind session for peace, health, equality, justice, happiness and fulfillment. That’s what I’d do to start…

The book is a lovely compilation of “Everyday Ideas from Women Who Want to Make the World a Better Place”. I keep it laying around in various places throughout the house, and whenever I need a dose of inspiration, I read one story of how one woman is putting her ideas into action in her community, whether it be ensuring an entire class of under-privileged school children get funded all the way through college, or creating an Art Day to provide art therapy for a community that lost their homes in a fire.

There are tons of inspirational quotes from amazing women, my fave being from Jodie Foster, who says, “Let how you live your life stand for something, no matter how small and incidental it may seem.”

Echoing Shelly Rachanow’s question: What would you do if you ran the world?
