Pirates of Compassion

whalesThe first time I heard Captain Paul Watson speak, I was moved to tears. He told the same story you’ll hear in the video below, about being in a dinghy between a huge whaling vessel and a pod of fleeing whales and not being able to stop the harpoon that sailed past and into the back of a spectacular sperm whale.

He caught the eye of the dying whale before he went under in a sea of blood, and in it, he saw understanding - and pity.

That moment changed Paul Watson’s life forever… (more…)

Vegan Kitty? Huh?

vegan kittyFeel Good Guru was at the Toronto Green Living Expo on Sunday discovering a whole lot of great green innovations. (vid coming soon!)

Of all the fab green building ideas, green food, green body products and green seminars, I left with only two green things in my hands: a tub of my favorite Sigrid Naturals Carrots & Roses face cream, and a sample bag of vegan (!) cat food by Ami Pet Products in Italy.

I have friends who raise their dogs as vegans, healthy as can be, but as far as I know, none of my animal-loving pals have vegan cats. Willow Green Eyes Yoga Cat loves her Wellness brand Herring and Chicken like it’s crack. So I took the sample, hoping she’d dig it, but assuming she’d poo-poo as she does anything not “Wellness”. Banksy strikes again

Recently opened, the “Village Pet Store And Charcoal Grill” in Grenwich Village in New York is the latest installation of British graffiti artist, Banksy. It’s outrageous, audacious, oddly haunting, and according to an email the BBC received from the elusive artist, was mounted in response to his experience seeing a pet chiuaua wearing a diamond necklace paraded past a homeless man.

A bold statement to point out our strange relationships with animals - how we spoil some and turn others into hot dogs. (more…)

30 Days - Animal Rights

Ok so who saw this show on FX last night? 2.4 million viewers did. I was one of them and I bawled.

Morgan Spurlock, known for the documentary film Super Size Me, created the television show 30 Days, now in its 3rd successful season, in which one participant (sometimes Spurlock himself, but not always) gets to experience 30 days of something they would otherwise never encounter in life, for example 30 days of working in a coal mine or 30 days in a wheelchair. Oprah - America’s conscience?

There was not a dry eye yesterday in Oprah’s audience as they watched a dog being euthanized to make room for more animals in an overcrowded shelter.

On Friday, Oprah brought to the world’s attention the horrors of puppy mills, and encouraged everyone to adopt a pet from a shelter and save a life rather than buy a pet from these cruel and abusive mills where the animals’ health and welfare are grossly neglected in the interest of higher profits and quicker turnarounds. Rescue Ink - bad ass boys protecting your mutts

I saw these guys on the news last night. A woman in New York had lost her dog, or it had been stolen, and within 2 days, they were able to get pet and pet companion reunited.

These guys are gonna be huge. They’re a gang I can get behind. They’re a gang I wanna join, though they claim not to be a gang, vigilantes or a social organization.

They’re a big fat band of bald and tattooed bad asses doing good deeds for our (more…)

Kundalini Yoga Doggie

Only in Venice, California is it possible to luck into a Tuesday night kundalini yoga class in a gorgeous Dwell home where “breath of fire” is exchanged between four fabulous humans and three cute dogs. It’s the best way I can think of to spend an hour winding down (or winding up as is often the case with kundalini) after any Tuesday in L.A.

Frederick Fulmer leads you through a semi-private relaxing and invigorating set with breathing and chanting, stretching and twisting til the dogs are snoring. (more…)
