I’m lost down the rabbit hole of this detailed look at chemicals and “nanoparticles” in cosmetics and body products by David Suzuki and wanted to pass on the map so you could join me;)
While we’re supporting our system from the inside with high quality foods, it’s only logical to concern ourselves with what we put on our bodies too… Now that we’ve made the leap to organics in our produce, let’s demand more transparency from cosmetics companies and vote with our dollars for products that are safe for our skin, our hair, our nails and the environment.
How many cosmetic products do you use in a day? Chances are good it’s about 10.
Here’s just one paragraph from the cosmetics database referred to by Suzuki:
“At first blush it may seem that mascara and shaving cream have little relevance to the broader world of environmental health. Think again. In August 2005, when scientists published a study finding a relationship between plasticizers called phthalates and feminization of U.S. male babies, they named fragrance as a possible culprit. When estrogenic industrial chemicals called parabens were found in human breast tumor tissue earlier this year, researchers questioned if deodorant was the source. And when studies show, again and again, that hormone systems in wildlife are thrown in disarray by common water pollutants, once again the list of culprits include personal care products, rinsing down drains and into rivers.”
Scary, huh?
It’s pretty toxic territory, that of perfumes, hair dyes, moisturizers, shampoos, powders, lotions, sprays, lipsticks and gels… But change is afoot, and when armed with all the info, we have the power of choice.
Bon courage! Come back and let us know if your favorite products are on the list of what not to buy…
