Avenue of the Giants

giantsTwice this summer, once southbound in July, then again, northbound in August, I rode the Avenue of the Giants, a 31-mile portion of the 101 just south of Eureka, in northern California surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park’s over 50,000 acres of redwood groves – the largest remaining stand of old growth redwoods in the world.

Each time, I couldn’t resist getting off the bike and walking into the forest. Something about these magnificent ancient trees draws you in like a spell. Some of them are 2,000 years old, and stand over 360 feet tall. If I’d been standing there for that long, I’d have some wisdom to impart. So I took a nap on a tree and listened…
