It’s Pesto Season!

basilIt’s the end of July here in southern BC where I’m visiting friends before my great northern adventure and there’s a basil patch the size of Texas in their garden.

There are also some monster organic zucchinis taking over the world, and our other friends up the mountain gave us some incredible homegrown garlic…the perfect fresh-picked ingredients for Zucchini Linguini al Pesto.

Yes, it’s pesto season!!! The two vids below will show you how to make a fabulous vegan Hempseed Pesto and if you’re a raw freak (and who isn’t in this heat?) Zucchini Linguini. Enjoy! …and dig my Crocs;) (more…)

Death By Rubber Duck

slow-death“Pollution is now so pervasive that it’s become a marinade in which we all bathe every day.” pg 3 of Slow Death by Rubber Duck

Yes, it seems we’re being slowly boiled alive like the poor stupid metaphorical frog. Everything we ingest, inhale and absorb these days is toxic.

In “Slow Death by Rubber Duck” authors Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie take a page from “Supersize Me” by locking themselves in a room for a week and simply using everyday products like shaving cream, shampoo, teflon, tuna, carpet cleaner, scented lotion, plastic containers and factory food. (more…)

Live Your Adventure

mg-bike1I put the question out to my friends on facebook and twitter what their idea of the ultimate adventure is. The responses I received were as unique as the individuals.

One guy wants to go extreme skiing after a fresh snowfall in the Alps, someone else fantasized about riding a zip line through a forest canopy in Costa Rica. One woman answered “whatever scares me.” Someone else said “It helps to have a tank of gas.” And two women insisted that their lives, every single day, are an adventure. That’s groovin’ with the woowoo! (more…)

Green Cities~Reykjavik, Ic

blue-lagoon-icelandNot only do the numerous hot springs running beneath the world’s northernmost capital provide its denizens with a place to soak and relax, but these geothermal springs also provide almost all of Reykjavik’s heat and water.

Located on what geologists call a “hotspot” with a high concentration of volcanoes, Iceland gets 70 percent of its energy from renewable resources like springs and waterfalls.

In direct contrast to its name, which means “Smokey Bay,” Reykjavik is now known as the world’s least-polluted capital. (more…)

40 Things I Know…

carolleifer…at 50 (because 50 is the new 40). That’s chapter 2 in Carol Leifer’s new book “When You Lie About Your Age, the Terrorists Win” and it had me laughing out loud from number 1 ~ “the people who frequent nude beaches are never the people you want to see naked.”

When you’ve been on the planet long enough that sharing your best story of seeing The Beatles live at Shea Stadium in the summer of 1966 causes people to exclaim, “Jesus Christ!…How old are you?” you’ve probably gleaned a gem or two of wisdom, and if you’re Carol Leifer, you’re able to give the whole not-for-sissies aging process a humorous twist that makes all of us, no matter how young or old, fear it a little less. Apple Dandelion Salad

dandelionappleI suggested this beautiful salad on day 14 of the 21-day cleanse as our first meal coming back in to solid foods after 5 days of juicing.

Bitter greens are excellent liver cleansers, and keep our body trending toward alkaline balance. The bitterness of the dandelion greens is countered nicely by the sweetness of Fuji apples, both bitter and sweet are smoothed out by the cashew “cheese”, and the ginger lemon drizzle brings it all into balance.

Make this for any summer luncheon or as a wonderful app at dinnertime. (more…)

What is Your Symbol?

keyinholeBy Kelly Sullivan Walden

I awoke the morning after Extraordinary BookWoman Day with a dream about an ornate golden key going into a keyhole. The door opened and there was Robert Langdon, the hero from the Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, presenting a talk on symbols.

He lectured about the value of symbols and their impact on our lives, in that they can convey in an instant a meaning that would otherwise take a paragraph (or two or three) to express. (more…)
