Animal Lovers Brunch

firepit paellaSunday marked the 3rd annual post-Genesis Awards Animal Lovers Brunch here in our Venice garden. A tradition that was started by VegNews has grown every year to overflowing capacity in our jasmine-scented walk-street garden.

This year was co-hosted by yours truly, Feel Good Guru and animal photographer extraordinaire, Susan Weingartner, and catered by Feel Good Guru, with a lot of help from my dear friend and excellent chef, Chiyoko Tanaka and the multi-talented Kathy Leonardo. On the menu, too many vegan delights devoured too quickly to photograph. The Firepit Paella, pictured here, required a little zen and the art of fire management, but was a huge hit. (more…)

“I Had The Strangest Dream”

dream and willowHow often do you wake up saying that? And how often do you find yourself wondering what your strange dream means?

I had two strange dreams back-to-back the other night, and when I awoke, I couldn’t shake them. That’s why I keep my friend Kelly Sullivan Walden’s book “I Had the Strangest Dream…The Dreamer’s Dictionary for the 21st Century” beside my bed, along with my iTouch for notes. Though I believe that a good portion of my dreams these days with info-overload are simply a discharge of data from the trash can of my subconscious, occasionally I remember one that feels like a cryptic crossword puzzle which, once solved, will help bring clarity to my waking life…   (more…)

Arugula Pesto Risotto

arugula risottoAny Italian would get crazy on me for naming this dish risotto. It can’t officially be called a “risotto” for lack of arborio, butter, white wine, cheese and beef stock…oh, and saffron and veal shanks. But I call it risotto because it’s more than just rice, I like the ring of “arugula pesto risotto”, and it has that creaminess and stickiness reminiscent of the traditional Italian dish.

Put on a pot of organic short grain brown rice, whip up your pesto and devour this delicious clean green dish with crunchy red peppers, fine kale ribbons and fresh picked zucchini. (more…)

Winter Veggie Sushi

sushiSushi rolls don’t always have to contain fake crab meat made with farmed white fish and red dye, and salmon eggs injected with orange dye.

It’s surprising how easy it is to make your own California-style rolls at home. The only tool you need is a bamboo mat, available at most health food stores and all Japanese markets for a couple of bucks. Or if you don’t have that, even a piece of saran wrap will do.

I always make mine with organic brown rice rather than the refined, bleached white sushi rice. Makes it “less authentic” but much more healthful - and I really do prefer the nutty aroma and toothsome texture of the whole grain. (more…)

Sweet Potato Leek Soup

sweet potato leek soupI made this soup two nights ago and just now have the last luscious bowl in front of me. The smooth sweetness from the sweet potatoes feels so good in my belly on a cold night, and I added a little bit of heat from my favorite quick condiment, Wewoff New Zealand sea salt & jalapeno. No fresh dill at this time of year, but a sprinkle of dried dill finishes this creamy soup off nicely.

You may note in the recipes here the absence of the instruction “peel” before chop, dice or slice. If I’m using organic veggies, which I almost exclusively do, I never peel. I simply wash and chop. Somewhere along the way, we got in to sanitizing everything, including our food. A good portion of a fruit or vegetable’s nutrients is in its skin. (more…)
